Designing sustainable, elegant homes that feel deeply rooted in the South Carolina Lowcountry is her life’s work. For over 35 years, Michael and Jane have led Frederick + Frederick Architects in Beaufort, SC in creating homes that are beautiful, resilient, and designed to thrive in our hot, humid climate.
What Jane is especially good at is drawing out the heart of how someone wants to live. She listens not just for the big-picture vision, but for the subtle things, how you move through your day, where you like to pause, what makes you feel at home. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about how a house lives.
Jane puts that skill into practice every time she sits down with a new client. Through thoughtful conversations, she uncovers the lifestyle rhythms, emotional priorities, and sensory details that shape the design. It’s this kind of deep listening that allows her to translate your values and routines into a home that feels natural and personal from the moment you walk in.
And the difference it makes? Clients often say the house feels like it was designed just for them, because it was. There’s an ease and clarity when every room supports the way you want to live.
That same intentionality carries into other parts of Jane’s life. She loves to cook and entertain, pairing flavors, textures, and settings to create a memorable experience. Design works the same way: it’s about putting the right pieces together, thoughtfully and with care.
In 2023, Jane was honored with the AIA South Carolina Medal of Distinction, the chapter’s highest award, and a milestone as the first woman recipient. She also served as the 2020 National President of the American Institute of Architects and continues to advocate for protecting the unique character of the Lowcountry through organizations such as the Open Land Trust, Coastal Conservation League, and Port Royal Sound Foundation.
She speaks and consults internationally on sustainability and resilient design for hot, humid climates. Jane is a Fellow of both the AIA and the Aspen Global Leadership Network, a LEED Accredited Professional, and serves on the Beaufort County Zoning Board of Appeals.
Around the office, she’s known for her calm confidence, sharp eye, and ability to make the complex feel simple. But most of all, Jane loves helping people create homes that truly feel like home.
