Michael Frederick, Firm Principal, AIA, LEED AP
Michael's knowledge of historical and vernacular architecture, coupled with his keen ability to combine timeless architectural truths with current advancements, enable him to create award-winning custom residences that celebrate the region's architectural and natural heritage while exceeding client expectations and providing high, lasting value.
After graduating from Auburn University in 1982, Michael Frederick began his architectural career with Berkus Group Architects, one of the leading residential architectural firms in the country. In 1985 he went on to found Frederick Hamm Architects in Washington D.C. after obtaining his architectural license. In 1989, after four successful years of practice, Michael and his wife Jane, an accomplished architect in her own right, moved to Beaufort, SC, where they launched Frederick + Frederick Architects.
At Frederick + Frederick, Michael does most of the preliminary work, site design, and presentation watercolors. “We feel that the key to great design is our ability to listen to our clients’ desires and produce a space that makes someone's daily events more enjoyable,” says Michael. This husband and wife architect team hears their client and the result becomes a product that is better than the sum of the parts.
Over the years, Michael’s dedication to excellence has continued to shine through as he has involved himself with various local and regional organizations. He took advantage of South Carolina’s waterways by serving as commodore of the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club in 1999 and accepted the dual role as dad and coach when his children played for the Beaufort County Girl’s League Soccer and the Beaufort Humanities School’s Destination Imagination team of problem solvers, who he lead to win the South Carolina State Championship.
Today Michael enjoys serving as a member of the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce, Lady’s Island Business and Professionals Group, South Carolina Coastal Conservation League and the American Institute of Architects (South Carolina Chapter). Additionally, he is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Green Building Construction Technology Department at the Technical College of the Lowcountry where he is helping to develop a new curriculum that will produce graduates that understand building technologies required to create a sustainable future.
Although he values his involvement in these activities, Michael’s true passion centers on creating sustainable architecture that connects people to their environment. “Sustainability strives to balance the needs of mankind with the environment so both can coexist into the future,” said Michael. Building and restoring existing architecture that provides spaces that enhance our day to daily lives and restore and preserve the natural systems that sustain life is his goal.
Michael is a licensed architect in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and a Licensed Home Builder in South Carolina. He is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Accredited Professional.
